A short stay for an older adult at a care home, so the family member who usually provides care can take a break. Your loved one has everyday support day and night while you are away.

For travel, a wedding or funeral, a work trip, the caregiver’s own surgery or illness, or simply to rest. Some families also use a short stay to see how a care home feels before considering anything longer.

No. A respite stay covers everyday personal support, not nursing or medical care. Health questions and medication changes stay with your loved one’s doctor.

Reminders follow the schedule set by the doctor. You provide a current medication list and instructions. Nothing about the medications is changed.

You’ll go over this before the stay. Families usually bring current medications and instructions, clothes, toiletries, any walker or cane used at home, and a few familiar things from home.

Ask when you call. You’ll know where your loved one will stay before anything is booked, and you can ask about seeing it first.
